You’ve built up a following on Facebook, your editorial strategy is sound, but are you worried your posts aren’t reaching your target audience? Fear not! We’ve found a pretty handy guide to Edgerank, Facebook’s somewhat confusing News Feed algorithm, and how you can make sure it delivers for you.
It’s long enough to be flirting with TL;DR-status, but if you’re serious getting your content out there, hanging on to the end is recommended!
We touched on the increasing importance of your social profiles — and consequently the increasing scrutiny they’re under — in last week’s Watercooler, but at the risk of repeating ourselves: they’re pretty important. It turns out it’s not just future colleagues who take a look at your holiday photo albums, it’s also your prospective employers. So optimising is important, but there’s always the chance they won’t like what they see, and that position you want could just disappear.

Some stats to keep in mind include:
- 93% of hiring managers will review a candidate’s social media profile before hiring
- 55% of hiring managers have reconsidered a candidate based on the content of their social media accounts.
- Facebook (26%) is second most-popular platform for candidate searches, behind LinkedIn (79%)

Newly-released stats from Facebook show that 30% of their 1.32 billion monthly active users access the platform solely through their phone. In general, app usage grew a staggering 76% in 2014 — and that trend is set to continue this year.
So if your brand is intent on breaking into the mobile market, it looks like developing your very own app could be the way to do it. App development can be a bit of a minefield, however, and its product occasionally a little…. hit or miss. So where to start? Consider these three pointers from Yahoo head honcho Marissa Mayer:
- The Two Tap Rule – “Once you’re in the app, is it two taps to do anything you want to do?” If not, time to redesign the app.”
- The 5-Point Rule – Back in her days at Google, Mayer would tell designers to count a point for every different font, font size, and color on a page. If a page goes above five points, it’s time to redesign.
- The 98% Rule – Mayer believes that every product should be designed for the way it will be used 98% of the time. It’s why the easiest thing to do with your mobile is make a call, and the easiest thing to do with a Xerox machine is make copies.
Our summary: Keep it simple, keep in mind what you want it to do, and make it easy to do just that. Not a bad jumping-off point for your first developer meeting!
